Given the growth of the field, the need for information and resources became apparent for practitioners, scholars, and the general public. The purpose of the ACSM is to unite carceral sites and museums in a collaborative effort to further public understanding of carceral histories and realities, and to promote best practices.

The ACSM is committed to connecting historic carceral sites and museums across the country, in order to address the contemporary challenges of the American carceral sta

The ACSM was established in 2022 by Dr. Megan Cullen Tewell, a public historian in the United States with a specialty in histories of crime, punishment, and incarceration. The ACSM is committed to connecting historic carceral sites and museums across the country, in order to address the contemporary challenges of the American carceral state. The ACSM also provides timely and continuing information and education regarding prison public history.
